Have you checked with a debugger what the real class (the isa pointer)
of the object is? Just because it's a proxy doesn't mean it's an
NSDistantObject (i.e. a Distributed Objects proxy). Maybe NSURL is
just implemented in terms of a proxy for some reason. (I have no
reason to believe it is, but who knows?)
