It doesn't seem like that's the case:

"With Mac OS X 10.5 and QuickTime 7.3 or later installed, QTKit provides the framework level support that is required to use QTKit objects on background threads. This includes the ability to tell QTKit when you want to use a QTMovie instance on a background thread, when you're attaching or detaching a QTMovie instance from the current thread and also allows control of the QTMovie idle state."

I'm not an expert on this - you might want to consult a QT specific mailing list for a definitive answer.
