types, not converting them. You could do something like this:

serialPorts = [(NSArray*)devicePaths copy];
CFRelease(devicePaths);

Or you could just retain your serialPorts object:

serialPorts = (NSArray *)devicePaths;
[serialPorts retain];
CFRelease(devicePaths);
