If the contract doesn't specify something, then the only thing that's safe to assume is that it's not supported. I'd argue that implementation details shouldn't influence higher-level design if the contract is well-specified. Although, it's probably unavoidable that it happens---but, you want to make sure that your design doesn't *depend* on an implementation detail that's not specified in the contract.
