So, if "as alias" does not work, what exactly to use instead?
Oddly enough, it seems to work for me in Script Editor under Leopard:
tell application "Finder"
set theFile to POSIX file "/เม่น"
open theFile
end tell
The file opens, and doesn't get transformed into anything. What
version of OS X are you running?
