There is an interesting study regarding the sociology of Cocoa Indie developers at http://madebysofa.com/indiefever/ which I read and enjoyed via http://daringfireball.net/.

My wife and I used to describe the various Cocoa developer forums, WWDC, the old MacHack, Stepwise, etc. as my "island." I think we started calling it that because I was "kicked off the island" once. i.e. banned from Apple forums and shunned by some acquaintances. I eventually scrambled back onto the island suitably chastised and continue to wander the sunny but sometimes lonely beaches to this day.

The study seems accurate but a little shallow to me. If I had been interviewed instead of merely cited, I would have pointed out how many of the Cocoa developers in the "Indie" community have substantial reputations in other areas. It's interesting to see how a familiar community is presented to the outside.
