UINavigationBarAppearance *appearance = [UINavigationBarAppearance new];
[appearance configureWithTransparentBackground];
navigationItem.standardAppearance = appearance;

Thats the simplest per-item way to do it. This does imply you adopt the new 
appearance APIs introduced in iOS 13.
