in my case, the "icon" is really a bitmap in the first place.
(It is an image of a painting - I know, this is not the traditional look of 
icons.)

Agreed, I should have tried that , too.

But I think, the main point is that icon images cannot be > 32 pixels in case 
of a status bar item.
And bitmaps contained in a PDF probably won't work either.
