If the sample rates didn’t match, and CoreAudio didn’t resample, the audio would be played back at the wrong speed & pitch, which would be pretty awful — for example, if it ran a pro audio file sampled at 192kHz directly into a 44.1kHz interface, it would play at ¼ speed, which is unlistenable. Obviously this doesn’t happen.
