As joar says, look at the Quartz Event Taps API and the Accessibility API. To try out examples of applications that do what you're trying to do, download: 1. The free 30-day trial version of PreFab UI Browser <http://prefabsoftware/uibrowser/>; and 2. The free PreFab Event Taps Testbench <http://prefabsoftware/eventtapstestbench/>.
