I think you are right. I did some experimenting and it appears the updateCursor: message is only sent to the view if its window is key. That's a problem in my case because the window is not and cannot become key.

Is updateCursor: a Leopard thing? I'm still on Tiger and there's no such method on my machine that I could find. If it is your own method, why can't you just call it yourself? I guess I don't really understand your problem.
