I have an app that sends emails, and what I did is have it post the message parameters to my server. Then, a PHP page processes the parameters and sends mail using PHP. One advantage to doing it this way is that it will work anywhere, without the user having to do any configuration. In my experience most SMTP servers only work on the local ISP / network.
