Howdy folks, I just thought I'd give you all an update on some of the happenings regarding CoApp.
For those that aren't aware, a software engineering class (25 masters' level students) in Syracuse University is going to write a bunch of code for CoApp. Their work begins in a couple of weeks, where they are going to build (all in C#): - a couple of client applications (GUI and Command Line), - an implementation of the CoApp-Engine (comprised of two components-the Toolkit, and the Engine) - and a Server consisting of an OData/AtomPub package server and a Web Client The long term plan involves replacing the managed implementation of the CoApp engine with a native one--which will eliminate the dependency on .NET 4.0 for installing CoApp MSI packages outside of the client applications. Their timeline for all of these components is to deliver them by around the middle of December. This allows us to also proceed with the development of the native version of the engine while having a functional version we can work with. On the tools side: - Rafael's Trace implementation is already functional, and he's rapidly approaching the point of having a stable beta. - Eric is making progress building the mkPackage tool-we are aiming to see it functional to the point of creating some test packages by early next week. - The code I'm working on: o the native CoApp-Bootstrap exe that gets embedded into each MSI. This will be done in the next couple of days so we can build some test packages. o I finished a test EXE and DLL maker that builds and signs Side-by-side Assemblies for testing. o A few other bits of an intermediate testing/development framework to support the efforts of the Syracuse University team. (more about this in a follow-up email) And, just in case it seems like I've not got enough fun in my job, I'm travelling to Europe next week & stopping in Ireland, Sweden, Austria, Italy and Portugal, talking with communities and the Microsoft subsidiaries about CoApp and open source.
