I have wood blocks that came with the boat.  I like the concept of spartite but
the pros don't seem to outweigh the cons.  I've had zero problems with my
traditional shims and the spar tape/boot tape that the boat yard used has been
perfect.  I even had some canvas made to cover the tape so as to reduce wear
and tear due to sun and weather.

Once the position of the mast is set, the shims aren't really under load while
standing still.  One of my shims had a notch cut to prevent it from sliding
down.  I mirrored that notch on the opposite block and trimmed the top off just
a smidge to make for a smoother mast boot.  I can't recall if they are just
pine blocks or if they are some hardwood.  As I recall they were not
particularly wide and could have been made out of dimensional lumber.  A 2x2
perhaps.  Maybe an oak 2x2?
