Nick,
By “switches” do you mean the Battery Selector Switch? It’s often red and has 
different positions like 1, 2, ALL, NONE or OFF. If so, this determines what 
battery powers your starter… and in turn, which batteries receive  charge when 
engine is running. Common advice is to NOT pas through the NONE of OFF position 
when the engine is running as it can damage your alternator.

I have a 1980 C&C 34, but it has been repowered with a diesel… I’m not aware of 
any other switches pertaining to the charging system.
