Dave,

First thoughts are that it's an in-water repair. Removing a transmission usually means pulling it aft a few inches to clear the connection between the engine and transmission, so you should be able to do this by sliding the prop shaft back just a few inches. It does depend on the clearance between the prop and the rudder, but most boats have enough room to make this work.
