Richard:
I don’t know anything about the 29 Mark 1 specifically. However, I have had two trucking experiences, one for a Ranger 26 and the second for my current C&C 42 Custom. The Ranger did not have a cradle, so one was constructed out of wood to place on a trailer for transport. Whoever built the cradle left nail heads in the wrong places, and the hull suffered deep gouges as a result. Easily repaired, but annoying. Moving the 42 was more interesting. The boat had a form-fitting cradle, but the parts of the cradle that supported the hull fore and aft were not adjustable. As you likely know, cradles are not typically designed or intended to support the weight of the boat. The keel supports the weight, and the cradle holds the boat in place. If the cradle is not adjustable, it is difficult to determine if the weight is being borne by the keel as it should be; or if, instead, the cradle is bearing some of the weight. In the case of moving the 42 – you guessed it – the cradle was bearing too much weight. Consequently, the hull forward of the keel was damaged during transit (the gel coat and outer skin cracked). Aside from repairing the damage, one of the first things I did was arrange for the cradle to be reconfigured with adjustable pads. Bottom line: take great care in preparing for the move. Karl; I would recommend looking into it: in looking back on it; our trailer move went very well; we took the time to prep the trailer (new axles and tires) and made sure the boat was situated on the trailer correctly: ( had to use a come-a-long to move the whole boat forward about 3 inches, but it improved the trailer tongue weight noticeably! We also went during mid-day when there was light traffic and no school busses moving about. We had a parade of four vehicles and the required flags and wide load signs. I recommend a cold beer or more afterwards...! If you have specific questions please feel free to call or email me direct, thanks Richard 1985 C&C 37 CB; Richard N. Firefly is a C&C 29 Mk1 with extended keel which is lake locked 3 hrs away. We have been considering moving her closer to home, back to the Columbia River. As previously mentioned she is due for hull paint (or wrap) as well as bottom inspection, paint etc. So the choices become hire a boat mover, or obtain a suitable trailer (rental or buy). I have plenty of trailer-tow experience just not with a 29ft fixed keel sailboat. The question to the group is: Any insights, experience or thoughts on 29 trailering?
