FWIW, Our boat has a speed sensor on centerline just in front of the keel. The depth sensor is next to it and I had to replace both when one went bad. Had to cut larger holes through the hull to fit the newer style sensor sleeves, so I can share some stories. The "speed through the water" sensor is great for racing but when cruising, I simply use my cell phone, and Navionics and GPS speed. Bought a $15 clamp for the pedestal guard to hold the phone at the pedestal and love it. I keep the plug in the hull thru-hull 90% of the time, and only switch to the paddle wheel sensor, before racing. Found I don't miss the paddle wheel sensor readout. I monitor GPS instead.
