Agree Joe, It is very rewarding to make the boat easier to operate and fit your own style. Harken and others offer many new improvements to rigging hardware today that weren't thought of in 1973. Whenever I attend the Annapolis boat show I study all the new boats to see what ideas they present as far as making my boat easier to handle. I take pictures of things I like and later incorporate them into my setup which has evolved over time.
FWIW, My traveller is just in front of the pedestal and easily reached when steering. I also double ended the fine tune so I can work that too from either side. The crosshauls are a single line run through Harken wide angle cam cleats mounted on the cockpit coaming. This allows the helmsman or crew to release either side or adjust the car up from either side. These ideas came from studying dinghies but also can be found in the Harken catalog.
