FWIW, I had a "dry exhaust" a few weeks ago and found we could test the exhaust riser elbow by pulling off the 2" exhaust hose and then with the stop cable pulled, we turned over the engine to see water spitting out the exhaust riser into a bucket. On my Universal M4-30, it proved the exhaust injection elbow and riser were fine.
Sidenote: I wound up replacing the entire 20 feet of 2" exhaust hose because it was 33 years old and all the cooling lines which I had installed twenty years ago. About $500 for hoses and clamps but well worth it for much peace of mind. My original problem was the raw water pump bearing assembly, which allowed the pump shaft to dissengage from the engine. $140 in parts got that fixed and all was good again.
