For an gasoline engine that might be true, but for most diesels the result of feeding dirt past the Racor would be clogging up the filter on the engine. Now if there is water in the fuel – that would get through the engine filter ☹

If the Racor is the issue because it is doing its job and there is particulate matter coming from the tank, bypassing it will allow the matter to get to the engine.
