Depending on the conditions you usually sail/race in, (higher winds (>15
knots), waves that are high enough to pound into, etc.) and your spreader
angles aft (if any) and mast stiffness, etc. you may find that you can either
remove it permanently (my solution) or just release it and connect it to the
mast base and forgetaboutit. OTOH, if the mast is pumping fore and aft while
going upwind without it, you may need to keep it on board and live with the
consequences to the head sails.
In racing conditions, any protective solution that leaves it in place is likely
to lead to only marginal improvements in sail life IMHO.
Where I race and cruise in the protected, shallow NC sounds and light winds, I
can count on 2 hands the times the conditions were such that the mast might be
pumping over 20 years time. If I notice it, my race is just over! OTOH, if I
was going offshore, racing or not, I wouldn't leave home without it.

Subject: Stus-List Baby stay vs new headsail
We’ve been sailing this summer with two exhausted composite headsails (110&125)
purchased with our 37, Sirius. The leeches on both sails reveal a tortured past
with the babystay. With a new Precision tiradial 120 coming over winter, we’re
practicing tacks with no babystay contact, backwinding lightly to pull the sail
over.Improvement needed. For those of you with babystays, what strategies do you
employ to avoid sail contact with the stay and/or minimizing damage?I’ll search
archives, too. Thx
