A friend at our yacht club had his steering cable snap the other day. I had been planning a steering system lube and check for a few years and this motivated me to move it to the top of my priority list. While I was lubing and checking yesterday, I found one spot with broken wires on the cable. 1. I was hoping to replace it in the Fall/Spring when the boat is out of the water. Should I be more worried and plan to do it sooner? There is plenty of intact cable, but I don’t know what causes these breaks and if they are an indication of imminent failure. 2. the area under the pedestal is inaccessible without removing the pedestal. Obviously that is a big job, which I have never done. Is it possible to replace the cable without removing the pedestal? Would I be smart to hire someone to do this job (PITA for me, but easier for someone experienced)? Thanks- Dave
