Wouldn't the oil held in the filter be considered part of the total oil
capacity?

Diesel engines typically have a larger oil sump than a gas engine of the same
size. That being said. A lot of the time engine manuals list total oil
capacity. What would be added after an overhaul. You could have undrainable oil
left behind, what might be in a cooler, turbo etc. If you change your oil when
the engine is warm, some may not be completely drained back to the pan. On my
Yanmar 4JHE I have a hose attached to the drain plug. I put my suction pump in
the hose and such out any oil that would typically drain out of the plug.

Stus-List 3HM35F oil capacity puzzle
I have a Yanmar 2GMF which calls for 2 quarts of oil...I use 2 quarts of
oil every change...always do it when the boat is in the water just
before Fall haulout as the oil pan is most likely level. And I use a
larger Napa oil filter than the small Yanmar filter.
But 6 quarts of oil....what marine diesel engine requires 6 quarts....my
V6 car engine only takes +4 quarts?
