Just thought I'd share a tip that saved me $60 in parts. Many of you probably
already knew this, but I learned today, I've been doing something wrong for
fifteen years.
I've always flushed the Harken traveller car and all the sheaves from above but
today I learned, that wasn't doing the job. My traveller car didn't roll
smoothly and made grinding noises. I thought the balls were deteriorated. I
have the whole thing home while refitting my boat and I could set the traveller
beam and car upside down on a pair of horses and really clean it good.
Flushing the balls from above has been a waste of time. The balls can only be
seen through slots in the car from underneath.
Car is Harken 1930 w 50 Torlon Balls 3/8" on a Harken 32mm high beam.
I cleaned the balls, reloaded them into the car and the system is good as new.
So in future I have to get the hose underneath to flush 'em properly.
