FWIW, Selden makes a few bow ring options. They make a bow ring that can be supported by the pin going through the bow roller as seen on Beneteaus. This model raises the pole too much for me. They also make a plain stainless bow ring meant to be welded to your existing pulpit, but you need to hire a welder.
I selected the bow ring that has it's own swivel mount for the deck. This ring fitting raises the bottom of the pole 1 1/2" off the deck. If that isn't high enough to clear a bow toerail, you could add a fiberglass (G-10) pad under the mount. My boat has a flush aluminum plate across the deck at the bow so shouldn't be a problem. Selden is an expensive option if you decide to go the sprit route, but the quality is 10X higher than anything I could imagine building on my own for 36 foot boat.
