My solar panel connects straight to the house battery. My alternator also connects straight to the house battery. The ACR senses voltage on the house battery and connects when it gets high enough to charge the start battery. The ACR can also be connected to sense the start battery, in which case mine would not combine. It also IIRC can be configured to sense both batteries. I have the ACR remote panel, so I can see when it combines ,force it closed, or force it open.
