Thank you all for your helpful hints. I tried making sure it was straight - it was. I tried tightening it hard with two hose clips and still the leak persists.
In the end I took the outlet to my friends at West Marine and they suggested I order a new outlet. Even though it is a 1 1/2" outlet, the hose fitted very loosely over it, with too big a gap to seal properly. So I have a new outlet coming - let's hope it's a tight fit and I also ordered some Gasoila. Hopefully we will succeed (eventually!). -- Ian Matthew "Siento el Viento" C&C 29-1 San Francisco Bay
