If I was going offshore, I'd install a good VHF with GPS and AIS and interface it with my chartplotter. Heck, I do coastal sailing and I've got that. I had to holler at a coastal freighter once to avoid a collision. It helps to know the name of the vessel instead of "that ship near the such and such buoy".
