Did some additional research on the Thunderstruck and it seems like a pretty good, reasonable and straightforward solution. Due to the slightly larger displacement of the 36, I would probably need to step up to the ME1616 and run it @48v for 12kW. Unfortunately this model has the added complexity of cooling which I need to sort out.
Does anyone know of any resources for some of the more obscure specs for the 36 (prismatic coefficient, etc.)? I am trying to optimize the power required to minimize the amount of solar and battery storage without underpowering the boat or constraining myself to the marina. Still deliberating on whether to invest in a serious battery bank now or start with the deep cycle and let the battery technology evolve and/or price-points come down. This will obviously be driven somewhat by the aforementioned power needs. Any advice on location(s) of the batteries? Obviously I want to minimize the impact of current weight distribution. I am still considering “just” doing the head gasket as my primary option, however the more I dig into it, the likelihood of it being pandora’s box once I get her open seems to be pretty high, then what? In for a penny…I would prefer to spend my time figuring out a potential electric solution, however I do want to get her sailing. Chandler Rohal TBD C&C 36 Rockaway Park, NY
