Hey Joel,
My boat's tank is similar to David's.  The regulator has flex hose on the 
outlet, but the piping to the tank is solid.  No leaks.  I check using soap.  
The fitting that attaches to the tank has an O-ring and that needs no teflon 
tape  or pipe dope.  I use Megaloc Tape and Megaloc pipe dope on all plumbing 
fittings on my boat.
