The 1972 Cal 33 I grew up on also had an alcohol stove (I believe it still
does). We also had a bicycle pump for pressurizing. The problem we found is
that only people who know how to start it should be trusted doing so. You
begin by putting liquid alcohol in the “bowl” (or whatever it’s called) and
lighting it to heat the element before it will function normally. It was not
uncommon to hear a hissing sound while the element heated up, followed by an
open flame. People not familiar with the flame issue would be startled and
might do something stupid. Heavier-than-air fuels have their own issues
(obviously).

As a stove backup, I carry on board one of those little butane single burners
used to make Sunday brunch omelets. It’s fast, simple, and safe; and I find
that I use it more than the regular stove. Of course, it depends how you use
the boat – we don’t do a lot of cruising or make gourmet meals.

Subject: Re: Stus-List HilleRange stove parts - now 35-1 alcohol stove

Glen,

The 35-1 stoves were pressurized alcohol. We still use ours. The Admiral
teaches an outdoor base camp cooking class for the Louisiana Wildlife and
Fisheries Department so we not only are familiar with pressurized alcohol
stoves we kinda like them. :)

The instructions for using them are posted on the C&C Photo Album website (Gee,
what a great resource it is.)

I installed a truck tire valve stem on my tank and use a small bicycle pump to
pressure the system.

Most of them use a Primus burner. Some parts are shared with camping stoves.

Alcohol fires can be put out with water. Alcohol doesn't accumulate in the
bilge. :)
