I'm not sure everything in Washington is cheaper, but I am sure that using non-boating sources for boat project items sure is:
I have a lifetime supply of #10-24 x 1/2" stainless socket head capscrews that I needed for a project. The bag of 100 from Fastenall was about half the cost of the dozen or so I needed from a local chandlery. The last time I resealed the 4 aluminum framed portlights on my 38, the EPDM seal came from Lowes and the 20 feet or so of spline from a glass shop that rebuilds storm doors and windows. Total cost less than one rebuild kit from South Shore. Deck cleaner at WM is about $15 a bottle (less when they have the 2 for 1 sales). At Walmart it's $6. Now, Pamlico Sound isn't the Chesapeake. Attractions at destinations are limited. But there are a lot of good places for gunkholing. And the sailing is great in Washington. Durham is about 2 hours from here, depending on where you need to go. I had a friend who worked in Cary, and only needed to be in the office one day a week. She sold her home in the RDU area and moved near the beach in the Wilmington area. She drove to Cary one evening and stayed in a motel, then home after work. The reduction in her mortgage payment was much more than the monthly hotel bills, and she got to write off the hotel as an unreimbursed business expense. Plus she gets to walk the beach every evening if she wants. Ask me off list if you want about housing costs and property taxes (mine are under $600 a year). Everything there costs a ton less than Annapolis!!!!!!!!!! * we actually have thought of it if work would let me stay home forever or at least only go in once a week, our closest office is Durham.
