Last year I did my icebox lid with MinWax Helmsman Semi Gloss Spar Varnish –
the oil based version. It is about $19 a can at the hardware store and is
designed for outdoor wood.
This was test 1 and so far it looks good. I just now did a binocular rack, a
book rack, and a handrail I had home in the shed. The handrail is the first
thing that will be outside. I randomly came across a long term test of varnish
by Practical Sailor and the Spar Varnish was in the test and did a decent job.
All the solid color type stuff like Cetol came in behind the better varnishes
including Helmsman.
It isn’t a fast process, I am using about 5-6 coats and light sanding between
coats.
