Key can stay. In my case I have to lock the wheels to prevent the shaft from rotating and "dumping" the key out. Depending on the circumstances I may even grab a rubber band to ensure that it doesn't get lost. If you want to remove the shaft there are 3 plastic shims which need to be aligned with their notch top dead center. Everything else is easy to see and disassemble. The 3 shims will not present themselves.
