I have been thinking about this since Adrian posted, and I also think the Dip
Tube would be the way to go.
When you are sucking, that vacuum doesn't know the difference between a bottom
discharge or a dip-tube, there is liquid there and it is going to suck it.
One advantage I can think of in addition to his comment on the leaking at the
bottom, is that with a bottom discharge, the hose almost constantly has stinky
stuff in it, whereas sucking from the top it only has stinky stuff in it when
you suck for a few minutes, then gone. That hose is not likely to emanate as
much smell as if it was on the bottom. However, if the rubber seal on the top
of the tank is of poor quality as you mention, that could be a problem.

I Would be inclined to use the dip tube, as long as the pickup is around an
inch from the bottom. Judging from the way my shop vac sucks water from the
bilge, seems like it would clean it out pretty good.

Subject: Re: Stus-List Head Tank Replacement.

I ask because I’m considering the same issue. My 34 had the same type of tank
you described, and Ronco had a direct replacement. I liked the bottom drain
because the tank empties by gravity in addition to the pump at pump out. I
have been less enamored with the dip tube configuration on my 42. The outlet
seems more prone to releasing odor, either because the dip tube is held in
place by a rubber gasket or because more sewage is left at the bottom of the
tank. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
