Here in Maryland we are getting below freezing nights already. In the 7 years I've owned the boat I have not removed the compass during winter.
The compass is filled with mineral oil. Remember that water is defies the natural laws of thermodynamics in that it gets progressively less dense as its temperature departs from 4°C. Most substances (oil) actually shrink as they get colder.
