I think you are over-thinking this,

Couldn’t you just use a 4X 4 upright and screw a bracket to it or something?

I used to use a 6X6, with a crutch screwed to it to support 80% of my laid down 
mast, and used duct tape around the mast partners to keep most of the water out.

That was pretty heavy, tho.

Subject: Stus-List bottom of a broken mast?

 

I have a mast up cover that lays over the boom, but part of this winter I 
expect to have to store the boat outside with the mast down (due to work being 
done on the hull inside a shed).  I was thinking that an easy way to do this 
would be to find someone’s broken mast and use the part up to the gooseneck to 
stick in my mast opening.  Then I could attach the boom to it and the cover 
would work.  Any suggestions on where to find a broken mast to scavenge?
