It depends on the mood of the marine cops. As long as you are going slow, they seem OK with a white light mostly. Don’t be running around at 20 knots that way though. ANY light is better than none. I was leaving Annapolis one dark night when suddenly there was a loud squeak and someone started yelling. I had managed to hit someone in an inflatable and it sounded like a basketball on a wood floor LOL. The dinghy skipper was curing up a storm, but otherwise unharmed. I advised him that a black rubber boat on a dark night being rowed by someone in dark clothes was quite the stealth boat and the next boat that hit him might not be doing 5 knots ;)

My sense is that this is legal according to: A power-driven vessel of less than 7 metres (23.0 ft) whose maximum speed does not exceed 7 knots (13 km/h; 8 mph) must be capable of showing a white light I want to make sure this is current and I am presuming that “capable of” would include a handheld flashlight. I have read a few horror stories of people being cited by police for violating dinghy regulations and want to make sure I am legal or need an all around white light.
