The engine in my 38 is a Universal M35-B, which is probably pretty similar to your M35.
The diesel was installed by the PO, and was made circa 2000. When I first bought the boat I also had problems with the lift pump. With longer use it would heat up and the pump would lose pressure, starving the injection pump. I replaced the OEM pump a time or two before having a failure out back of nowhere with no chance of getting an OEM pump. As an emergency stand-in we used an electric lift pump for a circa 1985 Chevy pickup with a V6 fuel injected engine. Similar performance and a lot more reliable (it is still out in the garage with the other engine spares). Talked to the Service Manager at the Universal WD in Norfolk about the problems. He told me that the overheating had been a chronic problem, and that the pump had been upgraded to a new part number to correct the problem. The part number for the new pump (for my M35B) is 039275. I bought two – one to install and one for a spare. The installed one is still working after more than a decade and 1000 engine hours, and the spare is still in the parts kit on the boat. You might call the Universal engine dealer in your region and see if there is an upgraded pump for your engine. Or, if your Universal engine is derived from a Kubota tractor engine (as mine is) you could call the local Kubota dealer and buy an OEM lift pump for a lot less than buying the Universal part. Engine is a Universal M-35. RPM would slowly drop down then engine dies. I am able to start it back by just opening the fuel blead valve on the injection pump. It happened after 4 hours motoring in dead calm sea with a full tank, and the Racor glass is clear. I had no problem when the engine is cold. I suspect the fuel lift pump. The electrical fuel lift pump I actually have is a CARTER 7H15A 504. Google cannot find it, and the only look alike from Carter is #P60504 or #P76438 superseded by #P90091. Can someone tell me what you have for lift pump. >From the spare fuel filter I have, primary (Racor 200FG) is 2 micron, and >secondary is 10 micron. I know it is wrong and I will go with 10 / 10. The 2 >micron might also start to be dirty. Good wind... Pierre Tremblay Avalanche #54988 C&C38-3 WK, hull #76
