As a follow-up, to gybe we simply disconnect the toe-rail shackle before gybing 
as normal.  We usually shackle the toe rail end to the boom bail to keep the 
preventer temporarily out of the way for the gybe.  If it’s blowing (which is 
when you really need a preventer), we sheet the main all the way before gybing, 
then let it back out after the gybe.  Too dangerous otherwise.

where it exits the boom, I could use that as a preventer.  Before letting the 
main out downwind, you would grab the shackle and run it forward to the toe 
rail near the bow and clip it in and then have control from the stopper on the 
cabin top.   Thoughts?  Dave 
  PS- No expectation of offshore/big waves racing in my future so this is a 
cruising/club racing solution
