It might be a good time to remind what grease is.  It is a lubricating oil, a thickener and additives.  The oils will be petroleum based or synthetic.  The thickeners range from soaps (aluminum, lithium or calcium based), clay (think kitty litter), or polyureas.  The additives are for rust/oxidation, extreme pressure, friction/lubricity, etc.
The most common grease we used in precision guided weapons was synthetic oil based with clay thickeners (Mobil 28, Aeroshell 22, MIL-PRF-81322).  This grease had a storage life of 10 years before the oil would migrate out and leave the clay sludge.  For 30 year storage life requirements, we used perfluourinated greases (Braycote 601EF). 


It appears that the Lewmar Winch grease is a calcium soap based 
synthetic.  I have used several tubes of it through the years and it is 
good grease.  $60/pound for Lewmar vs. $3,200/lb for Braycote makes the 
decision on winches an easier decision.



The best advice is to make sure your winches get used to keep the oil 
mixed in.

Oh... that sounds good. The Pawlls are rusted so I need to replace all 
8 anyway. May buy the kit and use the cheaper stuff for yearly 
servicing. Took me almost 4 hours per winch to get the sticky hard 
varnish that had developed!! What a mess. They look and feel brand new 
now!

    Good to have on the boat. This is what Peggie Hall recommends for
    lubricating the head pump, as well.

    A small tube is about $7 (CAD) at Home Hardware (special order).
    Readily available in any h/w store S of the border.
