You'll be fine without sanding for your iniitial application.  Remember
apply a maintenance coat of Cetol Clear at least every 6 months.  I lightly
sand with 220-320 grit before each maintenance coat.  However, you can also
rough it a bit with a ScotchBrite pad or just wipe it with acetone.
