Yeah Jim that was one of the factors I was considering in my future-proof
approach. I thought it would be a stretch to think that I would go up to
5/8ths or really even 1/2 but the core to core eye splice was definitely in
the consideration. Like you, I have elected to use a knot. I prefer the
double over hand or barrel knot since the tail lays in line with the
working end. I found some research that stated that the knot would retain
%80 of the ropes original strength. The biggest downside is that it is a
constricting knot and once loaded it is impossible to untie. I'm not
concerned since if I ever have to untie it then I will be replacing the
halyard or freshening up the end. In freshening the end I'd be loosing
about 6" cutting out the knot but saving at least 3 feet compared to
replacing an eye splice. Re-splicing old line can be troublesome too

One thing to consider about sheave sizes which I did not think about when I
replaced my halyards... don't forget to allow for the eidth of your line
due to your eye splice for your halyard shackle. It obviously makes the
line much thicker and makes it harder to hoist the last 8"-12" or so of the
halyard without creating abrasion on the halyard.

It was suggested to me to instead use something called the Jeanneau Halyard
Knot... something I never heard of in all my years of sailing but it solved
the problem for me and now I can raise the the halyard 100% without concern
for halyard wearing out faster at the top... here is a link on how to tie
the knot for those interested and never heard of it like me... I am
probably one of the last people to hear about it... never too late to learn.
