The bang is as good as a valve (as long as it stays there). Personal experience says that the hydro lock (with fresh water) in a diesel is not fatal. Might be somewhat different with sea water. Or if you let it stay there for a while.
Also clearing the water from a gas engine is simple (spar plugs); in a diesel you pray for the glow plugs (much easier to remove than injectors). That finally rusted out and the replacement WOULD flood the engine until I installed a higher loop. Flooding is a PITA for an A4, but it can well be fatal for a diesel. Joe Coquina
