I have only done a test in my darkened basement, but this seemed to work
very well:

It's far brighter than something like a LED indicator light but nowhere
near the brightness of your typical BA9S LED (and I couldn't find one that
fit anyway).

Assuming our compasses are the same (Gemini compass with the light under a
small black circular plastic light cap that snaps onto a holder on the
compass dome along with a red filter), by drilling out the hole in the
light cap slightly, this LED slides right in.  Don't use the filter ... get
a red LED. The only issue is the pigtails are such a small gauge (26 AWG I
think).

In my case the wiring and especially the BA9S socket were far past their
prime.  Perko makes replacement bases but they are pretty pricey.
