Bruce, They use non-tinned non-marine grade wire in lots of boats. I don't know why the ground tends to corrode first. Make sure you are cutting off enough wire to get to wire that is not garbage. Don't buy connectors at an automotive store. Speaker wire is likely garbage from end to end. You can't test impedance by checking voltage. Learned that one the hard way!
