Hi David, You are correct, it does not provide complete protection for the helmsman. And it can't be used with the main up and sheeted anywhere close to centerline, or for tacking or jibing.
It is pretty good in the rain in most cases, and if it really starts to pour Auto-Helm takes over for a bit. Ken H.
