I used Nobeltec TZ on my iPad Mini (along with a Bad Elf BluetoothGPS receiver) for the Annapolis to Bermuda Race a few years back; it was nice for its portability. But even with the Mini in a splash-proof Lifeproof case, I wouldn’t want to rely on it as the primary source for navigation. Stuff happens; batteries get low at the wrong time, things get dropped overboard or stepped on, and so on. Having a dedicated, purpose-built device connected to the boat and its batteries still seems to me like the best option. Having backups to that is also a good idea, one that the iPad fills well.
