Your basic "modified sine" cheap inverter has two hot connections, neither of which can be connected to ground. There is no "neutral". So long as you understand this, then ok. What it means is that if you connect to a single outlet as you describe, or to a string of outlets, what would otherwise be the neutral must not connect to the ground anywhere. Ever.
